English eccentricity with a touch of Italian design

Set in the upscale London district, the Mayfair Townhouse is the latest addition to the Iconic Luxury Hotels collection. It comprises 15 Georgian townhouses, including seven Grade II listed buildings, and provides a unique hospitality experience in the heart of the capital.

The boutique hotel has a magical charm and an interesting literary history, which reflects its location. Half Moon Street was historically a regular haunt of bachelors, bohemians and artists in Victorian London – also called “dandies”. Literature buffs will know that this very place featured in Oscar Wilde’s most famous work, The Importance of Being Earnest, where the central character lived in one of the “bachelor bedrooms”.

“Think Oscar Wilde meets Alice in Wonderland” – this is how the Mayfair Townhouse describes its own style. For its interiors, the London-based studio of Goddard Littlefair has been sympathetically inspired by the Victorians’ exuberant, decadent décor.

A series of Contardi lights, some with exclusive adaptations to suit the specific requirements of the interior designers Goddard Littlefair  – as well as items from the standard collection, including the iconic Ongo Battery lamp, designed by Jessica Corr for Tzelan – have been selected for this special project.

The lights are dotted around the whole building, from the reception to the bar area, and on the staircase up to the guest rooms. On arrival, visitors are greeted at the reception desk, with warm glowing bespoke cut-crystal lanterns casting shadows on the ceiling. Adjacent to the reception, a stunning customised alabaster disc chandelier descends over the staircase and creates a dramatic and awe-inspiring effect. On the ground floor is the beating heart of the Mayfair Townhouse, the Dandy Bar. A soft and intimate atmosphere, provided by the gold-coloured Ongo Battery lights on the tables, invites visitors to enter and enjoy this oasis of peace, away from the busy streets of Mayfair. Tailor-made wall lights with tiered fringe panels in an ombre effect deliver a further wow factor.

The final overall impression is enchanting, and the decorative lighting harmonises with the design as a whole in a delicate balance of traditional and contemporary. Contardi is able to capture and translate the designer’s concepts and meet the client’s needs with its standard and bespoke collections.
